Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Review

Erasmus Mundus was founded in 2004 as a higher education cooperation program funded by the European Commission and continued until 2013.

Beginning in 2014, Erasmus Mundus became a part of the Erasmus+ funding scheme, which lasted until 2020.

The Erasmus+ scheme was renewed for the period 2021–2027 and is expected to triple the number of participants.

While Erasmus Mundus Joint PhD degrees no longer exist, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programs continue to be delivered under the umbrella of Erasmus

The Erasmus Mundus Program backs European top-quality joint masters’ degrees and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The student grant covers participation costs, a monthly allowance for living costs, and a contribution to travel and installation charges. Each grantee will obtain EUR 1,000 each month for living costs during the 24-month duration of the program.

The scholarship also incorporates a contribution to travel and installation and any other type of costs to be paid in two installments, as well as the Euroculture participation costs of EUR 9.000 (EU students) and EUR 18.000 (non-EU students), including health insurance coverage for 24 months.

Eligibility criteria

  • Scholarship students must have already received a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognized equivalent level of learning according to national rules and legislation in place by the application deadline. That implies that scholarship applicants must hold a higher education degree by January 10, 2024, to start the program.

  • Students who have already received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) scholarship or are former Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral Course scholarship holders are not eligible for an additional scholarship under the EMJMD action. Trainees benefiting from an EMJMD scholarship cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing their EMJMD studies.

  • Students who have already secured a European-equivalent Master’s Degree will be deprioritized when applying for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

  • With very few exceptions, most nationalities are qualified to apply for this program. Differentiation between program-country students and partner-country students is applied. No more than 25% of the total number of scholarships available will be granted to program-country students.

  • The monthly subsistence allowance is not delivered to scholarship holders from a partner country for the EMJMD periods exceeding three months (indicatively the equivalent of 15ECTS credits) spent in any partner country.

  • The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Program divides all qualified and participating countries into a series of geographical windows. The Euroculture program, under the conditions of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Program, is needed to target students from a variety of geographical windows to ensure a diverse student body.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for Career Scholars

Scholarships will also be granted to PhD scholars enrolled in third-country institutions who will be selected by the Euroculture Erasmus Mundus Consortium to contribute to the joint program.

Please note that scholars interested in receiving grants may not apply through their online application tool but should rather submit a request to euroculture@rug.nl.

Deadline for Erasmus Mundus scholarship applications

The deadline for Erasmus Mundus scholarship applications has already passed. Self-financed learners can now apply.

The Erasmus Mundus Program supports European top-quality master courses and improves the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries.

The Erasmus Mundus Program provides EU-funded scholarships for Third Country students and EU/EEA students who have applied to and have been taken by the Euroculture Master Course.

Approximately 22 awards are awarded annually. There will be 22 funds available for applicants who wish to begin in 2024. Please be aware that the deadline for the 2024–2026 scholarship application round is October 15, 2023–January 10, 2024.

Later-submitted applications are only eligible to be classified as self-funding applications. The same application process is used to apply as a self-financing student or for a scholarship.

Additional scholarship applications are not required. There are presently no application costs for potential students in the Erasmus Mundus Program.
