Overview of Critical Language Scholarship

CLS is part of a US government endeavor to increase the number of Americans who study and master foreign languages important to our national security and prosperity.

These important languages are less typically taught in American schools, yet they are critical to the country’s constructive global engagement.

CLS is critical in preparing US students for the global workforce of the twenty-first century, enhancing American competitiveness, and contributing to national security.

CLS scholars also act as citizen ambassadors, showcasing the variety of the United States abroad, debunking preconceptions about Americans, and cultivating long-term relationships with individuals in their host countries.

Individuals representing a variety of the United States are encouraged to apply, including individuals from various backgrounds and academic specialties, as well as those with impairments.

Participants are required to continue their language studies after the scholarship period ends and to use the important language skills in their future academic and professional endeavors.
