Commonwealth Scholarships are available to nationals of specific Commonwealth nations for master’s and doctoral studies in the UK.

The UK Department for International Development (DFID) is providing funding for these scholarships to support international development efforts within the country.

For master’s or doctoral study, students from developing nations who would not otherwise be able to attend university in the UK can apply for Commonwealth Scholarships.

Purpose of the Commonwealth Scholarships

To teach professionals and academics who would not have been able to study in the UK otherwise, to help the Commonwealth countries meet their development needs.

Excellent postgraduate students who have never studied abroad extensively, who otherwise would not have been able to study in the UK, and who, with the knowledge and leadership abilities they gain, have the potential to contribute to the development of their home countries.

Who can Apply?

Applying for these scholarships requires that you:

  • Be a British Protected Person, a citizen of a Commonwealth country that qualifies, or someone who has been awarded refugee status by such a country.
  • Possess a permanent residence in a Commonwealth nation that qualifies
  • Be prepared to begin your academic studies in the UK by September or October of the following year, when the UK academic year begins.
  • As a PhD candidate, you are required to have the backing of a prospective supervisor from a minimum of one UK university specified on your application form.
  • Lack the funds to study in the UK in the absence of this scholarship.

Typically, the CSC wouldn’t pay for a second master’s degree in the UK. You must give a reason for your desire to pursue this study if you are applying for a second master’s degree in the UK.

How to Apply

The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships; instead, you must apply to one of the following nominating bodies first:

  • The primary application pathway is via national nominating agencies.
  • A few chosen nonprofits and non-governmental organizations

Each application needs to go via one of these nominating organizations. Everybody has the authority to choose its members and may have further requirements for eligibility.
