Alana Burke Scholarship: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

Beyond the Alana Burke Scholarship award, students are provided support and mentorship, attend social justice seminars and retreats, grow strong relationships with peers and community partners, and enhance their college experience through weekly community service.

Overview of Alana Burke Scholarship

The Burke Scholarship Program, funded by the Burke Foundation, is a four-year program for full-time undergraduate students who are passionate about social justice and want to help others.

This full-tuition scholarship is offered yearly to ten academically gifted Wisconsin high school graduates who have displayed remarkable community service, leadership, and social justice and wish to pursue occupations that enhance the public good.

Alan Burke scholarship is more than just a scholarship. They offer a huge gift to which students react creatively, consistently, and meaningfully – first as undergraduate students, then as responsible, active citizens.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Wisconsin high school senior or entering first-year student returning from a service gap year.
  • Before applying, you must have been admitted to Marquette University.
  • Volunteerism, community participation, leadership, career goals, and a strong desire to make a difference all demonstrate a commitment to social justice and community.
  • Academic excellence with a minimum GPA of 3.75. Applicants under the test-optional policy are welcome to apply and will be given equal attention.
  • To apply for scholarships or grants, applicants must complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Net Price Calculator. Undocumented, Dreamer, and DACA students can use the Net Price Calculator for verification.
  • International students are ineligible for this grant.

Scholarship Award Amount

    • Full Ride – tuition, fees, housing, and food (10 awards are available).

Scholarship Deadline

The deadline is on February 8. Once accepted to Marquette University, Wisconsin students will find the scholarship application on their admitted student site.

Application Process

The application process comprises both written papers and an interview. The winners will be chosen in March and, once accepted, will be invited to campus in early May to celebrate their achievements and be formally welcomed into the program.

Burke Scholars will go through the following during their four years at Marquette University:

  • Annual Burke Summer Retreat (three days, the week before orientation).
  • With direction and support from the Burke Scholarship program, students can volunteer 10 hours per week (150 hours per semester) with a local community organization, church, NGO, or governmental body to gain direct experience with social justice concerns in our city.
  • Bimonthly evening lectures for the entire group of 40 researchers focused on contemplation, team building, and social justice issues in Milwaukee and elsewhere.
  • Additional time spent on cohort meetings, peer mentorship groups, reflections, group service, and social events to foster long-term relationships.
  • Burke End-of-Year Celebration (the Sunday before finals week).
