Overview of Alexander Rutherford Scholarship

This scholarship was named in honor of Alexander Rutherford, who held the distinction of being Alberta’s first Premier and Minister of Education.

He was well-known for his vigorous involvement in community affairs and his ardent support of public education, especially at the University of Alberta.

The purpose of this award is to encourage seniors in high school to seek post-secondary education by recognizing and rewarding their academic accomplishments.

Eligibility Criteria

For consideration of the scholarship amount, the following requirements must be met:

  • Either a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada are required. If you are an independent applicant, you must be an Alberta resident; if you are a dependent student, one of your parents or legal guardians must be an Alberta resident.
  • If the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act has granted you the status of a Protected Person, you also meet the requirements.
  • Additionally, it is essential that you or your parents/guardians have lived in Alberta for the entire grade or for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the start of your course.
  • Students who completed their high school education more than 30 years ago are likewise targeted by the program; the maximum date of graduation is September 30, 1980.
  • You are eligible to apply for the scholarship if your high school graduation was on or after that date.
  • Make sure you have completed all of the required courses for a degree that lasts for at least one semester, as the program is only open to full-time students.
  • Moreover, each student is only eligible to receive the scholarship once.

Application Process

In at least one grade, a student must have a minimum aggregate average based on five approved courses, as determined by:

  • High School Completed Outside of Alberta: Courses taken and grades obtained on an official high school transcript outside of Alberta
  • Courses and grades on an official Alberta High School Achievement Transcript are only available to Alberta residents.

When students apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, they will automatically be considered for the following prizes. For these rewards, a separate application is not necessary.
