Overview of Full Ride Scholarships
Full Ride Scholarships are scholarships that cover tuition, room and board, expenses for books and other fees, and oftentimes money for expenses such as a laptop. Some even include bonus money that will help fund a research or study abroad experience over the summer.
Some colleges and universities may also award full ride scholarship recipients other benefits including the opportunity to be part of an honors program or preferential residence hall selection.
Types of Full Ride Scholarships
A full ride scholarship can be offered by the school, state or federal government, or by private organizations.
- Prestige: Students who have excelled in leadership, service, or another area are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Promising students are occasionally given the opportunity to receive full ride scholarships.
- Athletic: Some Division I or II universities provide full ride scholarships to those who demonstrate their athletic ability. Only football, volleyball, tennis, men’s and women’s basketball, and gymnastics are eligible for full ride athletic scholarships.
- State-Sponsored: A number of state initiatives help students pay for their college education. These differ from state to state and frequently are restricted to use at particular public colleges.
- Government: The government offers full ride scholarships to some students. Some common full ride scholarships offered by the government are for ROTC students, or students studying at a military academy.
- Merit-Based: One of the most common types of full ride scholarships, merit-based scholarships are reserved for students who have shown academic excellence. This is usually determined through GPA, SAT scores, ACT scores, or through a combination of the three.
- Financial need-based: Students from lower-income homes can be eligible for full ride scholarships at some schools. There are also private scholarships that use prestige or merit and financial need to determine recipients.
- Other Options: Full ride scholarships are available for a variety of causes. Certain scholarships may be legacy-based, while others may need a particular heritage. Almost every incoming student in college may be qualified for a full ride scholarship.
Top Full Ride Scholarships for College
Here are some specific examples.
1. Trustee Scholarship
Ten students will receive the trustee scholarship during a four-year period, which is open to all entering freshmen. The scholarship covers the whole cost of housing and board as well as tuition. Academic merit is the basis for this scholarship’s award.
2. Chancellor’s Scholars Program
Chancellor’s Scholars receive a full tuition scholarship in addition to invitations to exclusive retreats, luncheons and dinners, social events, and more. Students who are awarded this scholarship often have SAT and ACT scores of 2150 and 33, respectively, there are no minimum requirements.
3. Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship
The Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship, named for the school’s founder, provides full tuition and a summer stipend for immersion experiences like studying overseas. Students who demonstrate both academic and leadership accomplishments are given this honor.
4. Nancy Susan Reynolds Scholarship
The Nancy Susan Reynolds Scholarship provides $3,400 per year for personal costs in addition to covering tuition and room and board. Students who take the most challenging courses and achieve some of the highest exam scores and/or GPAs in the country are eligible to receive this honor. Up to five awardees may be chosen annually.
5. Charles Scholarship
The Charles Scholarship, which covers everything from tuition to personal expenses, is given to up to three students annually. These are offered to Chicago public school graduates with exceptional academic standing who exhibit a substantial financial need.
6. Soka Opportunity Scholarship
The Soka Opportunity Scholarship pays for tuition only, with any remaining educational expenses covered once other grants and scholarships are deducted. Students who have never attended college and whose families make less than $60,000 annually are eligible for this grant.
7. George W. Jenkins Scholarship
George W. Jenkins Scholarships are given to students who have overcome hardship to thrive, with a focus on financial need. The scholarship includes stipends for books, transportation, and personal expenditures in addition to tuition, lodging and board, health insurance, meal plans, and a laptop.
