Overview of Goldwater Scholarship

The highest honor bestowed upon STEM majors is the Goldwater Scholarship. Students with exceptional talent who plan to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering in their second or third year are eligible.

Eligibility Criteria

In order for a student to be nominated for a Goldwater Scholarship, they have to:

  • Attend a recognized two- or four-year college or university full-time as a matriculated second- or third-year undergraduate seeking a degree,
  • Aspire to work as a researcher in engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences,

  • The applicant must be a citizen of one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, or a permanent resident if designated by an educational institution in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. A copy of the permanent resident card, sometimes referred to as the green card, is required for permanent residents.

Selection Criteria

Goldwater Scholars are selected based on the following criteria:

  • High academic achievement is defined as having a GPA above 3.8 and demonstrating “intellectual intensity” through accomplishments outside of the classroom and early enrollment in graduate courses.
  • The selection committees also search for signs that the student will go on to contribute significantly to their chosen subject in the future.
  • Dedication to a profession in engineering, mathematics, or the scientific sciences. Research, internships, and related jobs bolster a student’s resume.
  • Letters of recommendation: faculty members who are able to discuss the applicant’s possibilities for a career in math, science, or engineering should be the ones writing the evaluations.

Application Process

Students must first be recommended by ASU in order to apply for the Goldwater Scholarship. Up to four students may be nominated by the university for this honor.

Not every kid who qualifies for this scholarship is competitive, despite the possibility that many will be.
