LANL Scholarship: A Comprehensive Application Guide

LANL Scholarship shares a dedication to academic achievement, leadership, and service. LANL Scholars attending the University of New Mexico have access to a campus-based program for LANL Scholars that delivers resources and support for first-year and transfer students.

This program also seeks to create community among all LANL Scholars on campus through social events, workshops, and service opportunities.

Starting in 1999, the LANL Foundation, in partnership with the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee, has labored together to increase access to higher education and open doors to brighter futures.

To date, they have awarded more than 2000 scholarships worth over $10 million to deserving students and adult learners from Northern New Mexico.

Eligibility Criteria

LANL Scholarship is competitive and available to qualified students who:

  • are locals (366 consecutive days+) of Northern New Mexico in Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Sandoval, Santa Fe, or Taos Counties. Learners attending a residential school in one of the seven counties (Santa Fe Indian School, NM School for the Deaf, and NM School for the Arts) are eligible regardless of primary residency.
  • hold a minimum 3.25 cumulative unweighted grade point average.
  • are enrolling in or presently attending an accredited post-secondary educational institution in pursuit of a four-year degree.

ACT and SAT scores are not needed. U.S. citizenship is not needed.

Preference is not given to learners with Los Alamos National Laboratory affiliation.

For existing undergraduate students only: Priority will be given to nontraditional students, first-generation college students, students with high financial need, and those attending a higher education institution in New Mexico.

Application Requirements

All Applicants

  • Present two letters of recommendation, one academic and one extracurricular (from a coach, supervisor, employer, community or tribal leader, etc.), or two academic letters of recommendation.
  • Present up to four essays (up to 250 words each) describing the following: career goals and personal objectives in pursuing a college degree, significant leadership roles held, community impact, and special circumstances or challenges (optional).

High School Seniors

  • Present a copy of high school academic transcript(s), which includes grades for the first semester of senior year.
  • Present copies of transcripts from postsecondary institutions for coursework not listed on the high school transcript.

Current Undergraduate Students

College freshmen must incorporate their high school and current college transcripts. College sophomores, juniors, and seniors must incorporate a copy of their current college transcript.
