Overview of Marshall Scholarship
Graduate education at any UK university for one, two, or three years is funded by the Marshall Scholarships.
Established by a 1953 Parliamentary Act and named for US Secretary of State George C. Marshall, the scholarships honor the humanitarian principles of the Marshall Plan and convey the British people’s unwavering thanks to their American counterparts.
The Marshall Scholarship is one of the most prominent and, consequently, competitive fellowships in the world. The selection rate ranges from 3% to 4% on average.
Marshall Scholarship enhances the long-term relationship between the peoples, governments, and institutions of Britain and America by providing them with a lasting grasp of British society, which will benefit them as future leaders.
Through its top academic programs, their direct interaction with Britain helps them achieve their ultimate personal success.
Eligibility criteria
At the time of application, and at the time they accept their scholarship;
- Be citizens of the United States of America.
- Possess their first undergraduate degree from a four-year American institution or university that has received accreditation.
- Having earned an undergraduate degree with a grade point average of at least 3.7.
- Have completed their first undergraduate degree program in the last 24 months.
- Not have completed coursework at a British university or possess a degree or credential that is equivalent to one.
Note that Marshall Scholars must remain in residence for the duration of their award period.

The selection criteria are split into three equally weighted categories:
- Academic Merit
- Leadership Potential
- Ambassadorial Potential
Application Process
Candidates complete the form and send it via the system to their undergraduate institution, which verifies its completeness and determines whether to recommend it or not.
In the event that the institution chooses to support the application, they will attach the letter of support and send it via the system to the relevant regional committee.

Application Deadline
The deadlines for the 2024 Marshall Competition are as follows:
- 26 September 2024 for applicants and recommenders at 5:00 pm in the time zone your university is located.
- 28 September 2024 for endorsement and submission by a US Institution at 5:00 pm in the time zone where your university is located.
