Presidential Scholarship: A Comprehensive Application Guide

Presidential Scholarships are given to exceptional first-year Oregon students on a competitive basis. This scholarship is awarded to about fifty first-year students annually, and the selection procedure is extremely stringent. The kind contributions donated to the University of Oregon scholarship fund enable the awarding of Presidential Scholarships.

Overview of Presidential Scholarship

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was founded in 1964 to celebrate and recognize some of the most outstanding high school seniors in our country.

The program was expanded in 1979 to include students who show extraordinary potential in the performing, visual, and creative arts.

The program was once again expanded in 2015 to honor students who show aptitude and success in career and technical education domains.

One of the top awards for high school students in the country, Presidential Scholars is given to up to 161 students each year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Oregonians who complete their high school education in Oregon.
  • New domestic freshmen entering the program.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.85 overall on a 4.00 high school scale.
  • A noteworthy, proven track record of voluntary work and leadership.

How to Apply

The University of Oregon admissions application and the Presidential Scholarship application are two different forms. In order to be eligible for this scholarship for 2024–2025, you must:

  • By January 15, apply to the University of Oregon.
  • Keep an eye out for an invitation to access the UO Scholarship Dashboard in your email. This takes place a week after you submit your admissions application.
  • By February 1st, complete the UO Scholarship Dashboard’s online Presidential Scholarship application.
  • By February 15, turn in all necessary admission application materials to the Office of Admissions.

Only those invited to apply are eligible for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Nominations or individual applications to the program are not permitted for students (outside of the aforesaid process).

Scholarship Renewal

Presidential Scholarships are renewable every year for a maximum of 12 undergraduate terms spread over five years (summer terms not included).

Any remaining terms of the scholarship that you do not use before graduating will be forfeited. In order to renew, beneficiaries need to:

  • A minimum of 12 UO credits must be enrolled in and completed each term.
  • Keep your UO grade point average at 3.25.

Award Information

During the course of four years of undergraduate study, Presidential Scholars are awarded up to $36,000, or $9,000 annually (the annual grant is divided equally between the autumn, winter, and spring semesters).
