Overview of Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarship provides funding for two to three years of post-bachelor studies at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.
The scholarships, which were started in 1902 following Cecil Rhodes’s death, enable deserving students to attend Oxford University from nineteen nations on five continents.
Every year, thirty-two American Rhodes Scholars are chosen. Rhodes Scholars have the option of pursuing a higher degree or a second bachelor’s degree.

Eligibility Requirements For U.S. Applicants
US applicants need to:
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States as of April 15 of the application year (having been in the country for five years prior to applying). DACA candidates must submit the necessary paperwork to support their status, which includes a valid date on their U.S. employment authorization card and an authorized i-797 letter attesting to their DACA status.
- Be seniors in their final year of study, graduate students, or recent alumni.
- Hold a GPA of at least 3.7.
- Obtain a bachelor’s degree prior to enrolling in Oxford.
- Be under 24 years old at the time of admission to Oxford, or up to 28 years old if you have finished your undergraduate degree within the last two years. Re-applicants may only submit one application if they are still eligible.

Selection Criteria
The following standards will be applied while evaluating applicants:
- Superior academic standing.
- The drive to fully utilize one’s talents (as evidenced by proficiency in a variety of contexts, including teamwork-intensive artistic endeavors, athletics, music, debate, dance, and theater).
- Honesty, bravery, commitment to duty, kindness, selflessness, pity for the vulnerable, and camaraderie.
- The moral strength of character and natural leadership and concern for other people.
