INSPIRE Scholarship – A scholarship program called INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education is run by the Indian government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST). This fellowship program is a part of DST’s flagship initiative, Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE). 

INSPIRE Scholarship

The INSPIRE Scholarship, which is intended for deserving students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the natural and basic sciences, awards 10,000 scholarships annually. Every chosen applicant under SHE is given INR 80,000 per year to pursue any course in the basic or natural sciences.

INSPIRE Scholarship – Overview

The Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) initiative, run by the Department of Science and Technology, aims to help the nation develop the necessary critical resource pool for bolstering and growing the signal and telecommunications system and research and development base, as well as draw talent to the excitement and study of science at an early age. 

In November 2008, the Indian government also authorized the INSPIRE Scheme, which came at a total cost of approximately Rs 1979.25 crore. The date of its introduction was December 13, 2008.

There are three parts to the INSPIRE scheme:

Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC) 

Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE), and 

Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent (SEATS)

INSPIRE Scholarship – Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for SHE must have also completed their coursework in Natural Sciences at the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. level and passed Class 12. Complete details regarding the requirements to be eligible for this scholarship are provided below.

  • The candidate must also be between the ages of 17 and 22.
  • The candidate’s cumulative score on the Class 12 board test must place him or her in the top 1% of graduating pupils.
  • In the year that they pass Class 12, the candidate must be enrolled in Natural and Basic Sciences courses at the BSc, BS, and Integrated MSc/MS levels.
  • Applicants who cleared the CBSE-Medical (AIPTM) and rank in the top 10,000 of the Joint Entrance Examination of IIT, AIEEE (top 20,000 rankers) and have chosen to pursue natural or basic sciences are eligible.
  • Candidates who are accepted to the University of Mumbai’s Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Basic Sciences (DAE-CBS), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) for Natural/Basic Science courses leading to B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees are also eligible.
  • Candidates who are also pursuing Natural/Basic Science courses leading to a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree and who are KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna), National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), Olympiad Medalists, and Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) scholars are also eligible.
  • The following table lists the subjects that are covered under the Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE).

Benefits & Awards of the INSPIRE Scholarship

The chosen applicants would also get an annual scholarship worth INR 80,000. Selected students will get an annual payment of INR 60,000, and those who complete a summer research project will receive an additional INR 20,000 as a summer attachment fee.

Additionally, Summer research projects under the supervision of an active researcher at an accredited research center in India are required of all selected students.

Through the INSPIRE Program’s online site, applications for the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) are accepted online. Detailed instructions for applying for the scholarship are provided below.

  • New users must also register on the INSPIRE scholarship portal.
  • Select “New User?” Sign up by clicking here. For their registration to be successful, candidates must submit their name, gender, date of birth, email address, password, qualifying requirements, and verification code.
  • They will also receive a user ID and password at the email address they registered. To activate the accounts, click the activation link.
  • Store each required document’s scanned copy as a separate file.
  • Enter their login and password to access the INSPIRE scholarship portal.
  • Complete the scholarship application form by filling in all the required fields, including personal information, enrollment information for B.Sc. and Integrated M.Sc. programs, information about senior secondary performance, details about national competitive exams, contact information, and other information.
  • Attach all necessary files to the online scholarship application.
  • Click the “Print Preview” button to check the information you entered before submitting the form. They have to confirm that all the information and files uploaded are accurate.
  • At this point, apply by clicking the “Submit” button.
  • Candidates must also print out their completed application for their records after submitting their online scholarship application in its final form.
